An adage: “to err is human, to really mess up you need a computer” and so it proved when ride leader Martin J inadvertently shared the wrong GPX file to attendees. Instead of uploading the carefully crafted route he compiled using Strava route builder, the dodgy downloaded route from the WWW went up. This sparked much debate among members until the error was identified and rectified.
So with the correct GPX file on our Garmins, five of us met up at the Wendover Library Car Park for a 27 mile mammoth of a ride linking up several familiar routes around Wendover, Great Missenden, Chequers and Combe Hill. The weather was cool with bright intervals and a light wind, ideal riding conditions.
Using Nathan B’s expert knowledge of the unmapped trails to the east of Wendover Woods, several fast and challenging descents were ridden, exhilarating stuff! The descents continued to come thick and fast as we rode our way down along the Ridgeway - yes this is why we ride.
We then made the gruelling climb up onto the South Bucks Way. Once up, we followed the twisty turny singletrack finishing with a fast descent into Great Missenden. Oh, how much more ridable the state of the trails were this time than in February!
It was in Great Missenden that we had a pre-arranged rendezvous with Steven W for 12 noon and, to the minute, we arrived at the Black Horse pub on midday! We took refreshments here before setting out in the saddle again to pick up the Grim’s Ditch to Chequers. It was in the Chequers’ area that we benefited from Steven W’s expert knowledge of the unmapped trails in the area, riding twisty turney, up and down singletrack to the base of Combe Hill.
Here we said au revoir to Steve W as he left the group to head back to Great Missenden. The rest of us made the steep climb on to the Southern slopes of Combe Hill, where the views opened up over the Vale of Aylesbury, yes it was worth the climb! Then up over the summit of Combe Hill and onto the final fast descent down to Wendover.
Many thanks to Martin J for arranging and leading the ride also Jim L, Martin I, Nathan B, Joshua C-S and Steve W for contributing to a memorable ride.
